The Province of Maeling lies to the east of Nork Town. It is a walled town with connections to Volcano Town via a south portal and an extensive 4-level dungeon system beneath it. The area features dense forest, cave systems, and several specialty lairs including the Double Ninja Lair quest chain.
The upper reaches of Maeling (533×542).
A tranquil place, once the Ninja Trainer's location. Access by climbing up from the puddle of water in Maeling town. Make a twig first before exploring.
Maeling Cave (646×540).
West of Maeling town. Come here to get a Yellow Robe. Watch out for Deep Eyes!
Maeling -1 (500×519). Green hex = stairs to surface, red hexes = stairs down to M-2.
First dungeon level. Good starting area for Maeling exploration. Enmiss protection needed.
Creatures: Tengus (use enmiss, hit paladins for ~20/turn), Lizardmen, Trolls (100-120 damage). Harder NPCs in the SW room. A few M-2 level creatures lurk to the NE.
Strategy: Let the lizardmen kill all the crits and then kill the lizardmen.
Drops: Fungus bread (occasional)
Maeling -2 (609×519). Green hex = stairs to M-1, red hex = stairs to M-3, purple hexes = secret passages.
Bring Infravision scrolls or the discipline to see on M-3 before heading down.
Drops: OgreLord Scales (break for 1K+ GP each)
Maeling -3 (636×409). Green hex = stairs to M-2, red hex = stairs to M-4.
Home to Ninjas and Golems. Ninjas drop Black Ninja Robes (BNR). Golems sometimes drop majors.
Creatures: Ninjas (drop BNR), Golems (sometimes drop majors)
Maeling -4 (645×387).
Full of Ogres, Stunners, and Golems that are harder than above. Named Ninjas hit for 200-300 damage and drop sashes with attack bonuses. Look for the Named Ninja in the Silver Ninja Robe (SNR). Blue parts of walls can be Illusioned or Doored.

Connected to Maeling -4 are four mini-lairs and the Double Ninja Lair (DNL). The mini-lairs form a quest chain – each requires a gem dropped by another lair to enter. All three combat mini-lairs respawn every 1 hour and 34 minutes.
The ultimate goal. Requires 4 items to enter (each is destroyed upon portal entry):
Entry requires: Flecked gem from Stunner Lair. Drops: Ray-like gem, +5 neutral katana, 0/3 blue sash.
Entry requires: Pulsing purple gem from Tengu Lair. Boss uses IH. Drops: Trapped gem, ceramic scales. Check if the Golem is wearing ceramic scales – only that spawn tans for the correct scales needed for the DNL.
Entry requires: Trapped gem from Golem Lair. Enmiss protection needed. Drops: Pulsating gems, Super Enmiss Robes (SER) sometimes.
Entry requires: Ray-like gem from Single Ninja Lair. Drops: Flecked gem, +5 neutral returning tanto with level 8 lightning.
