Underground Dwellers are extremely short and somewhat childlike in appearance. But don't underestimate them, because they are great fun once you get a few ales down them. In addition, they are extremely agile and have strong constitutions. As with the Outcasts, Lady Luck rarely smiles on the Underground Dweller.
Stat Caps
Underground Dwellers have the most restricted stat caps of any race. Their Charisma cap of 15 is the lowest in the game, and their Luck cap of 12 is dramatically below the standard 18.
| Stat | Cap | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CHA | 15 | Lowest of any race; three below standard |
| LCK | 12 | Lowest of any race; six below standard |
| All others | 18 | Standard caps |
Unlike other races that trade CHA/LCK for a 19 in a combat stat, Underground Dwellers do not gain any stat above 18. This makes them the most challenging race to play — the severe Luck penalty means a higher chance of being stripped on death, worse trap outcomes, and less favorable random events.
Character Creation Tips
- Underground Dweller is widely considered the hardest race to play due to the extreme CHA and LCK restrictions.
- Roll for 15 CHA and 12 LCK (the caps) — don't waste time hoping for higher.
- Focus on getting 18 in AGI and CON, which are the race's natural strengths.
- The 12 LCK cap means you will be stripped on death far more often than other races. Plan accordingly — keep backup gear.
- The 15 CHA cap means significantly higher training costs and Hit Doc prices throughout the game.
Recommended Classes
Despite the stat disadvantages, Underground Dwellers' natural agility and constitution make them viable for certain melee and rogue builds:
| Class | Why |
|---|---|
| Thief | Natural agility benefits steal, mug, and backstab |
| Martial Artist | Agility and Constitution tendencies support the dodge-based playstyle |
| Barbarian | High CON tendency helps with HP; Barbarians care less about CHA |
